Ways to Celebrate Summer in Oklahoma


Sun’s out, fun’s out! It's Summer in Oklahoma and the sun is shining bright and the flowers are in full bloom. While many of us are planning to go on a family vacation away from home, we forget about all the fun activities that are located in our own backyards! Add these local places to your summer fun list to make sure you and the whole family have the best summer ever!

  1. Rush Springs Watermelon Festival

Going strong since 1948, the Rush Springs Watermelon Festival is a fun event the whole family can enjoy. The event, filled with watermelon themed fun, includes an arts and crafts fair, carnival rides, seed spitting contest, lots of food vendors, classic automotive show and live entertainment. Round up the whole family and head on over to Rush Springs for a day of fun with the family!

  1. Broken Bow Lake

Want the camping experience without actually camping? Well a camping experience in the cabins on Broken Bow Lake might be for you. Tucked away in the serene area, the secluded destination is perfect for an intimate family stay. While being so far out, you will get lots of one-on-one time with your family around your homemade campfires. Most cabins are modernized, so you can leave the tent at home!

  1. Oklahoma Route 66

The historic Route 66 is known in history as one of the first highways in America. The road greatly traveled is a fun local destination you and the whole family can check out. One of the more popular attractions along the highway is the Oklahoma Route 66 Museum located in Clinton, Oklahoma. The museum reflects on the history of transportation and the historic Route 66. The beaming “Route 66” sign welcomes guests in to a world of classic cars and the “world’s largest curio cabinet” of items found alongside the famous road over the years. This is definitely a place you have to see for yourself this summer in Oklahoma!

  1. Myriad Botanical Gardens-Children’s Garden Area (splash pad)

The Myriad Botanical Gardens is a great family friendly destination. They also have a children’s Garden Area that includes a splash pad. This is a wonderful place for your kiddos to cool off and play while you sit back and relax.

  1. Drive in movie with the family

During the summer in Oklahoma, visiting a drive-in move in theater is a fun American activity. The nostalgia of kicking back under the stars is just a sight that cannot be beat. Drive in movie theaters used to be all the craze, but nowadays, they aren’t all over the map like they used to be. Don’t worry though, because Oklahoma still has a few around town that you can check out!

  1. Baseball game-Oklahoma City Dodgers

Take the kids out to the ballgame to watch our local team play during the summer time. At Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark, you can grab a hot dog and an extra-large soda while and cheer your team on as they play.
