Review of Interstate Heating & Air Conditioning

Had an unexpected issue with air conditioning unit Saturday afternoon. Made a call to Interstate and the service guy was out in under 30min (got lucky), but he was professional and quick. Cost was understandable being it was a late call on Saturday and unit needed replacement parts. Very glad we went with interstate.

I. And out for a no cool. His AC maintenance was scheduled for 01SEP20 as well. I checked the system over and found the dual capacitor swollen and reading 0. I installed a new dual capacitor. I washed the condenser coil and completed the AC maintenance. His filters needed changed. He said he’d take care of them. I cycled the AC and checked all temps, amps and charge. All working well.

I came out for a no cool on the Bryant system. That unit takes care of the SE lab. The condenser is tripping off on high limit. We have their AC maintenances scheduled for Monday morning. And he will need 150-200 foot of hose to reach around the building. I pulled the disconnect, so that ac wouldn’t continue to run.

I came out for a no cool. The AC wouldn’t shut off, even with no call for cool. I pulled the disconnect and checked the system over. The system was completely frozen up. I turned the blower in while I worked. I found the contactor stuck closed. Which allows constant power to the AC and keeps in on. With approval I installed a new contactor and washed the AC coil. By the time I finished washing the condenser the evap coil had thaw out. I cycled the AC and checked all operations and charge. All working at this time.

I came back out for a noise in one of the new increased return grills. There was a thudding sound. I cycled the system and checked airflow. The noise was the filter being sucked up against the frame of the filter grill. I bet he the filter tabs on the filter grill so it holds the filter in place. I cycled the system again and there was no more this coming from that grill.

I came out for a silver AC maintenance, on 1 split system and a 2 head mini split. I washed both condenser coils and mini split filters. I changed the filters in the house system, she supplied. I checked the blowers, evap coils, drains, capacitors, contactor and all wiring. I cycled all systems and checked all temps, amps and charges. Both systems working well.

I came out to inspect some ductwork he had already ran and was concerned about kinks in the line. The ducts were ran very well. There was only 1 of concerts and he’s going to trim some of the decking back to release the tension on the flex, which will get rid of the kink. I did make him aware that his returns were extremely undersized. He has a 4 ton system with 1-14” return. The system needs 1600cfm and it currently has 440. He’s already adding a return to the upstairs area he’s working on. I recommended adding a 16” return to the existing return chase and tying it in to the existing return planum.

I came out for a silver AC maintenance. I washed the condenser coil. I checked the filter, blower, evap coil, drain, capacitors, contactor and all wiring. I cycled the AC and checked all temps, amps and charge. There are a,ready signs his dog has peed on the bottom corner of the condenser coil. I made him aware of the issue and the damage it can do to the coil. He said he was going to take care of the issue. All working well.

I came out for a silver AC maintenance. I washed the condenser coil. I checked the filter, blower, evap coil, drain, capacitors, start kit, contactor and all wiring. I cycled the AC and checked all temps, amps and charge. The filter was getting dirty, but they have one to replace it themselves. The compressor is still running pound amd with high amps. But cooling properly.

I came out for a no cool. I checked the system over and found the AC high limit tripped. The AC coil wasn’t extremely dirty but his roof is being worked on. I reset the limit and cycled the AC. He head pressure was only 20 over ambient. I’m thinking they laid a tarp on the AC as it was running causing the limit to trip. I went ahead and washed the AC coil. Now running at 16 over ambient. All working well.

I came out for a no cool, on both systems. They had a lawn guy trim around the ACs and now they aren’t working. I checked the systems over and found the low voltage wires, to both systems, broken and the lineset insulation falling off. With approval, I repaired both low voltage wires and replaces a short section of insulation on both systems. I cycled both ACs and checked their operation. Both systems working at this time.

I came out for a drain issue. The previous renter said the drain wasn’t running correctly and tried to fire it himself. The pulled out the existing condensate pump and ran the PVC drain into the soffit. With approval, I removed the improper drain, reran the main drain into the condensate pump, removed the pump float cardboard restriction piece and double checked the wiring in the furnace. The house doesn’t have power at this time, so I wasn’t able to test the operations of anything. I told the owner, if he gets power on soon, we will return and do a quick check of the system operation for free.

I came back out for a no cool on the same AC. I checked the system over and found the mouse had gotten into the wiring again and chewed a sensor wire behind the AC panel. I fixed the wired and cycled the AC. I checked all operations. All working at this time. The unit is charged an operating properly. But occasionally the compressor makes a grinding noise for a few seconds, then goes back to normal. The damage to the low voltage wiring might has caused damage to the compressor. I made the, aware of the issue. They want to run it as is and address any issues later.

I came out for a no cool, on her rent house. I checked the system over and found the condenser fan running, but not the compressor. The dual capacitor was at 0 on the compressor side. With approval, I installed a new dual capacitor amd I washed the condenser coil. I cycled the AC and checked all operations and charge. The filters inside were pretty dirty and needed changed. I didn’t have that size in my truck. The unit takes 3 10x20x1 filters.

I came out for a no cool. The previous renter cut some wires in the air handler. The owner had done some work on the AC and tried to replace the thermostat. The wiring issue was only on the low voltage side. I reworded and mounted the thermostat and then redid all the low voltage wiring connections in the air handler. I tested the system in heat, fan only and AC. All came on and cycled like they should. The indoor system is in very poor condition. The blower wheel is dirty and the blower compartment if packed with insulation and other debris. The evaporator coil is improper for that system. It’s anN coil installed on an air handler so only 2/3rds of the coil is getting airflow. I recommend replacing the inside system. He didn’t want to at this time.

I came out for a no cool. I checked the system over and found the P-trap clogged and the float switch tripped. With approval, I cut the drain line and vacuumed out the drain and P-trap. I tested the drain with 2 gallons of water, after reconnecting it. All working well.

I came out for a no cool. I checked the system over and found the dual capacitor and start kit at 0. The fan side of the dual capacitor had just enough charge to run the fan. The contactor was also pretty burned and pitted. I went over repair options and the chose to go with the deluxe compressor saver kit. I washed the AC coil, installed a new dual capacitor, contactor and hard start kit. I wired the call in and cycled the AC. I checked all operations and charge. All working well.

With approval, I installed a new contactor and washed the condenser coil. By the time I finished washing the AC coil, the compressor was back in the electrical circuit. I cycled the system and checked all operations and charge. All working well.

I came out on a 1st year warranty. They’re selling the home and the home inspector said the temp split wasn’t high enough. I was getting a 13-15 degree split initially. I checked the system over and found the blower speed taps set for a 4ton and and it is a 3.5ton. I dropped the blower speed and rechecked the charge and all temps. The AC is up running at a 9 sub cool and it calls for 9. The system is now at a 20-22 temp split across the coil. I did notice the attic had only 2-8” pot vents cut into the roof. Which isn’t enough for the size of that attic. If the attic gets too hot, it will cause the air in the ductwork to heat up. I recommend replacing the existing vents with 2-14” whirley birds. System is in perfect working order at this time.

I came out for a no cool. I checked the system over and found the dual capacitor very low and not bringing the AC on. With approval I installed a new dual capacitor and washed the condenser coil. I cycled the ac and checked all operations and charge, the ac was a bit undercharged as well. I added 1lb of rw2 and set the SH to 23 and it was calling for 21. All working well.
